UPDATE Peso closes at new three-year low of P52.265:$1

Adds PSEi closing

The Philippine peso hit a new three-year low of P54.40 against the US dollar in intraday trading but ended lower at P52.265 on Tuesday.

The P54.265 close is the lowest since September 2018. It was the fifth straight decline for the peso vs the dollar.

On Monday, the peso ended at P54.065 against the US dollar.

Volume at the foreign exchange portal of the Bankers Association of the Philippines jumped  to $1.389 billion from $1.015 billion.

The Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) finished 48.75 points lower to end at 6, 285.19.

In the broader market, there were 94 declines, 87 advances and 53 unchanged.

Volume reached 885.4 million shares worth P3.965 billion from Monday’s 764.91 million shares valued at P3.57 billion.

Most active shares were led by SM Investments Corp., down P16 to P774; Ayala Land, down 15 centavos to P27.65; SM Prime, down 45 centavos to P36.45 and BDO, up 20 centavos to P123. DMS
